Reading Assesment

What I found interesting when reading Terry Barett's article Criticizing Photographs is the history of photography. One thing in particular is when Barett mentions the four stylistic trends. These trends are straight, formalistic, documentary, and equivalent. What I also found interesting is the categories of photographs. Some of the categories of photographs that Barret mentions are "The thing itself- photography deals with the actual, the detail- photography is tied to the facts of things, the frame- the photograph is selected not conceived, time- photographs are time exposures and describe discrete parcels of times, vantage point- photographs provide us with new views of the world" (pg. 61). Learning basic history of photographs like this helps you better understand the process and different types of photography which are in use today. This perhaps could be what Barret intended to convey to the reader.

Another thing that I enjoyed about the reading is that there was examples of styles of photographs. Two of the photographs that caught my eye were Sandy Skoglund's Walking On Eggshells and Gregory Crewdson's untitled (Women at the vanity). I wish Could say that it had a deeper meaning to me, but I think they stood out to me because I enjoyed the weirdness and colors in them. Also out of all of the categories of photographs which we use presently, I would say my favorite one is descriptive photographs. I say this because I love photographs which are taken to inform people. The example used in the reading was photographs that NASA takes which I love. After reading Barett's article Criticizing Photographs I believe it was informative and something that I can build upon.
