Book Theme and Format

The theme I choose for my project is how natural light drastically changes how an object looks. The way that I am going to lay this out in a book is that I will take a photo of the same object with different natural light and place them next to each other. Each page will have a picture. The way I want the actual book to look is that the front of it will be white and the back of it will be black. This shows that it is the same object just different colors (light and dark).

Ideas for Final Project

One Idea I had for my final project taking pictures while going camping. Nature will be a major player in the theme of the book. Also the normal camping things like fire and tents.

Another one of the Ideas I had is to take photographs of the different types of Architecture in New York City. From churches, business buildings, artistic types of buildings, etc. I will also like to compare old buildings to new buildings.

Reading Assessment for Chapter 5

1. I think the point that the author was trying to make was to give background information on the context of photographs to make better understand photographs when viewing them and to help us make better choices when we take them. Some of the context the author was trying to get across are internal context, original context, and external context.

2.  some of the things that I learned are the different kinds of contexts like external, internal, and original. According to the reading External context is "when the photographer is presented or found" (Pg.109).  Internal context is when "you pay attention to what is descriptively evident" (Pg.106). The way you view original context depends on the background knowledge of the photographer and viewer.

3. What I will take away from this chapter is how I view pictures, thinking of the context of which it is. Also knowing context helps you when taking a photograph, because you will keep in mind what the viewer maybe thinking.

Photographer for Presentation

The Photographer I choose to use for my presentation is Jon Cornforth. He is a wildlife photographer. I choose him because I enjoy wildlife photography and I enjoy the colors in his photographs.

Categories of Photographs

This is a photograph by Kenneth Josephson. It is called New York State (Ship) and was taken in 1970. It was done on Gelatin Silver Print. It falls into the theoretical category because it makes you think what if that boat was there? The URL is https://www.artsy.net/artwork/kenneth-josephson-new-york-state-ship.

This photo was taken by Frans Lanting in 1989 in Botswana. It is called elephant at dawn. this would fall into the Aesthetically evaluative category because it is showing something beautiful to look at. The URL is https://www.worldwildlife.org/magazine/issues/winter-2015/articles/into-africa-photographs-by-frans-lanting.

This is a photograph taken by Marc Ribound during the Vietnam war. This falls into the ethically evaluative category because it is showing a person saying peace instead of war. The URL is       http://art180grantzulick.weebly.com/critiquing-photography-challenge.html.

This photograph was taken by Mary Ellen Mark. It is called Rat and Mike with a gun and was taken in Seatle Washington in 1983. This falls under the interpretive category because it is describing the life of these two boys, but you don't know exactly what is going on.  The URL is https://www.flickr.com/photos/31187481@N03/3094252512.

This is a photograph by Henri Cartier-Bresson. It is called Spain and was taken in 1933. This would go under the Explanatory category because it is showing a way of life. It is showing how and where these kids are living. The URL is https://pro.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?VP3=CMS3&VF=MAGO31_10_VForm&ERID=24KL53ZMYN.

This Photo was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope by the ESA/NASA on October 20th 2017. It is a twisted cosmic knot . This photograph best fits the Informative category because it was taken for space research. The URL is https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/iotd.html.

Color Assignment

The first picture is the complementary color part of the assignment. In this case greens and reds. The ISO was 34 and the Shutter was 1/60. The EV was 0.

The second picture is suppose to represent the Monochromatic or Analogous Color part of the assignment with the black street being the main color with different shades. The camera settings were ISO-34, Shutter 1/640, and the EV was 0.

The third picture represents the patch of color part of the assignment with the white line representing the contrasting color. The camera settings were ISO-34, Shutter 1/640, and EV-0.

Reading Assessment of Criticizing Photographs Chapter 4

Some of the points I think the author was trying to make in this section are what interpretive photographs are, what ethically evaluative photographs are, and what aesthetically evaluative photographs are. The author explains this by telling you what these photographs are and then showing you examples.

Some things that I learned are that interpretive photographs "seek to explain how things are, but do not attempt scientific accuracy, nor are they accountable to scientific testing procedures" (pg.78). To be honest with you my favorite photograph example in this section was the boy looking up the girls skirt because it made me laugh. I also learned that ethically evaluative photographs "describe-some attempt scientific explanations, others offer personal interpretations- but most distinctively, they all make ethical judgements" (pg.83-85). My reaction to this is that it could be a way to express movements in the world or beliefs. Another thing I learned is what aesthetically evaluative photographs are. They are photographs "that point out what their photographers consider to be worthy of aesthetic observation and contemplation" (pg.91). My reaction to the material is that this is something that I feel the photographer has the most flexibility with because it is something that he or she believes people should see.

Depth of Field Part 1

The ISO for these two pictures is 34. The shutter speed is 1/1000 and the EV is 0.

READING ASSESSMENT ON BARRET CHAPTER 4

Philip Castellano

Professor Bozzuto

Digital Photography

September 25, 2017
Reading Assesment

What I found interesting when reading Terry Barett's article Criticizing Photographs is the history of photography. One thing in particular is when Barett mentions the four stylistic trends. These trends are straight, formalistic, documentary, and equivalent. What I also found interesting is the categories of photographs. Some of the categories of photographs that Barret mentions are "The thing itself- photography deals with the actual, the detail- photography is tied to the facts of things, the frame- the photograph is selected not conceived, time- photographs are time exposures and describe discrete parcels of times, vantage point- photographs provide us with new views of the world" (pg. 61). Learning basic history of photographs like this helps you better understand the process and different types of photography which are in use today. This perhaps could be what Barret intended to convey to the reader.

Another thing that I enjoyed about the reading is that there was examples of styles of photographs. Two of the photographs that caught my eye were Sandy Skoglund's Walking On Eggshells and Gregory Crewdson's untitled (Women at the vanity). I wish Could say that it had a deeper meaning to me, but I think they stood out to me because I enjoyed the weirdness and colors in them. Also out of all of the categories of photographs which we use presently, I would say my favorite one is descriptive photographs. I say this because I love photographs which are taken to inform people. The example used in the reading was photographs that NASA takes which I love. After reading Barett's article Criticizing Photographs I believe it was informative and something that I can build upon.

SHUTTER SPEED AND MOTION

These 2 pictures were taken with the ISO of 34 and an EV of 0. The shutter speed of the first picture was 1/50 and that is why the car is foggy and bright. The shutter speed of the bottom picture was 1/8000 and that is why it is crisp but dark.

REDO PART 2B

For these 3 pictures the shutter speed was 1/800 and the EV was at 0. The ISO starting from top to bottom is 34, 150, and 50. It was really bright out.

REDO PART 2A

For these 3 pictures the shutter speed was 1/800 and the EV was 0. The ISO starting from the top to bottom was 34, 150, and 1250.

REDO PART 1

The ISO for all 3 of these pictures was 34 and the shutter speed was 1/30. The EV starting from top to bottom was -1, 0, and +1.

Part 2 -B

These three different shots are were taken with three different ISOs. The ISOs starting from the top are 100, 34, and 50. I used a 100 ISO for the first shot because it was under trees, so it was darker. For  the second shot I used a 34 ISO because there was nothing above it to block the sky, so a higher ISO looked too bright. For the third shot I used a 50 ISO because anything below 50 I couldn't see the statues face and anything above 50 the background got super bright.

Part 2 ISO

These three Pictures I adjusted the ISO. The three ISO settiings starting from the top to bottom are 150, 250, and 400. As the ISO went up the EV did as well.

Part 1 (Bracketing)

These Photos are for part 1 of the homework (Bracketing). These pictures were taken to demonstrate 3 different exposures. These three pictures exposures starting at the top are 0, +1, and -1. Bracketing is when you take multiple photos of one scene with different exposures for each. The settings I manipulated on my camera (iPhone) was the EV.
